're dealing with a chris christie, a michael bloomberg, and an andy cuomo. these are three guys who are not shy. and if they think the federal government was not helping them, was not being aggressive, they thought the president wasn't on top of this or wasn't doing everything that they thought the federal government could do, don't you think they'd run, not walk to a tv camera and let people know? so you're in a unique situation here with a hard-hit area, so three very politically savvy, media savvy governors in the most important media market in the world. you don't want to mess this up. so i think this is a case where it's good politics not to play politics and just throw yourself into disaster relief because you're dealing with a high population area that, frankly, you mess this up, the whole world is going to know about it. >> yeah, howard, what's impressive to me is he's going to new jersey today. he went to jersey. we saw the pictures. not to one of those states that we got a little tired covering basically, the so-called swing states. he went to the states in need today. >>

transit. governor chris christie of new jersey announced within the last half hour that the path trains that run between new york and new jersey, he expects they will be out for seven to ten days. seven to ten days, and that is going to make it very difficult for those commuters who come from new jersey to work in manhattan. it will make it very difficult for them to get to work. mayor bloomberg mentioned some of the bridges are open anding they' ing and williamsburg bridge, the manhattan bridge and the brooklyn bridge, they are now all open to traffic, but again, you know, the mayor says, look, if you don't have a reason to go out don't go out because it is a scene of destruction here in new york city. i can tell you that as i drove down here, down the island of manhattan i was struck by all of the tree limbs that are down, the scaffolding is down. there is debris everywhere and once you get below 34th street it is dark because that is where the power is out in lower manhattan. more than a quarter million people there are without power this morning and it has yet to be restored. that m

is scheduling to arrive in atlantic city to survey the damage alongside governor chris christie. this morning the associated press reports the storm killed at least 50 people. there are more than 8.2 million households still without power across 17 states. and many of the outages could last beyond election day. between damage to property and the economy, the total impact expected to reach a staggering $50 billion. the damage is perhaps nowhere worse than the coastline of new jersey where sandy came ashore laying waste to an amusement park and historic boardwalk at seaside heights. as for the airports, jfk, newark, they're expected to resume limited service this morning. the same cannot be said for laguardia. jetblue posted these photos of the runways submerged. more than 18,000 flights have already been canceled as a result of sandy. and police had to take to the air to save victims from rooftops in staten island after floodwaters surrounded their homes. they were loaded one by one into baskets before being hoisted to safety. now let's go to breezy point. a neighborhood of queens which looks

in atlantic city cutting it off from the mainland. chris christie has told people there to stay where they are until rescue crews can come reach them. on "morning joe," he said his top priority is ensuring there's no more loss of life. >> we have three urban search and rescue teams with over 50 men and women who are in atlantic city right now rescuing people. we have urban search and rescue teams, as well. so far the loss of life has been minimal, thank god, but we have lost three folks, two in my hometown, actually, two parents who a tree hit their pickup truck. hit their pickup truck, they had their 11-year-old and 14-year-old children in the car, they survived, but both parents were killed. >> in addition to atlantic city, several other shore communities also took direct hits from the storm. look at this video, point pleasant beach at the height of the storm. ron allen is in point pleasant beach. all right, ron. i saw you on nightly news last night. obviously a much different situation this morning. you were there and you watched the storm come in, what do you see this morning? >>

, it was new jersey that took the direct hit from this storm. the governor of that state, chris christie is holding a news conference right now bringing reporters up to speed on the damage. we had the chance to talk to governor christie a little bit earlier this morning. i started by asking him about the state of his state. >> we have over 2.4 million people without power across the state. we've had flooding in the new york bay areas, rareton bay. new jersey area is 59% without power. it all came from the tidal surge that came through raredon bay and new york bay, and the same thing affecting new york city, and we have a battered, battered new jersey shore that i hope to tour a little later on today, but i think the losses are going to be almost incalculable. >> i was watching reporters all afternoon and evening from long branch and point pleasant beach and atlantic city, and do you have a lot of people that you think you're going to have to go out and account for this morning? search and rescue missions to find people that you haven't heard from? >> we are in the midst of search and res
